John Downey
John Downey heads ManageMen’s (OS1) Carpet Care program. In his position he co-teaches the (OS1) Carpet Care Workshop and conducts field audits, Boot Camps and Retunings for (OS1) Carpet Care users.
Downey is a fourth-generation carpet cleaner whose family business dates to 1897, Downey’s experience and contributions to the industry span 35 years and an impressive array of activities:
• His cleaning experience dates to his high school years working in the family business. In addition to carpet, rug and upholstery cleaning he has several years of hands-on experience in carpet dyeing and textile inspections.
• In 1989 Downey founded Cleanfax, a magazine dedicated to meeting the needs of professional carpet cleaners. Under his leadership, Cleanfax became the industry’s leading and most influential trade magazine. He sold Cleanfax to National Trade Publications in 1997 and continued as its editor until 2000.
• Beginning during his Cleanfax days, Downey has worked with the carpet manufacturing industry. His efforts have helped bridge the long-time chasm that separated the companies that manufacture carpet from those who maintain it. In recent years he has worked with both individual carpet manufacturers as well as the industry’s trade association, the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI), in the areas of facility carpet care and assessing the impact of carpet on indoor air quality (both before and after proper maintenance procedures are implemented).
Since 2000, Downey has been particularly focused on the needs and shortcomings of facility carpet maintenance. His work in this area has given him a keen understanding of the need for a systematic approach to facility carpet care, which is why he is excited at the opportunity to work with ManageMen.
